Maria Becerra Makes Acting Debut & More Uplifting Moments in Latin Music

From career milestones to new music releases to major announcements and those little important moments, Billboard editors highlight uplifting moments in Latin music. Here’s what happened in the Latin music world this week.
Maria Becerra’s Acting Debut
Argentine singer-songwriter Maria Becerra has made acting debut on Netflix’s new series En El Barro, the spin-off of the series El Marginal, produced by Netflix and Underground, a division of Telemundo Studios. Becerra, who also performs the series official song, “7 Vidas,” steps into the role of Cleo, “a young woman from the neighborhood who falls in love and faces motherhood while struggling to keep her child close in the midst of extreme circumstances,” according to an official description of her character. “Through this character, Maria portrays the fight for motherhood and the sacrifices made under adverse conditions.” The series is now streaming on Netflix — watch the trailer below:
Leading Ladies of Entertainment Class of 2025
The Latin Recording Academy announced on Tuesday (Aug. 19) its 2025 Leading Ladies of Entertainment honorees. The program, created nine years ago, honors and recognizes professional and socially conscious women in the arts and Latin entertainment fields who have made significant contributions and inspired future leaders.
The honorees are singer-songwriter Rozalen, and Latin music executives Maricarmen “Tuti” Bou, Amarilys Germán, and Paula Kaminsky. The women will be celebrated during Latin Grammy Week in Las Vegas, with Amazon Music joining as presenting sponsor for the second consecutive year.
“I am proud to present our Leading Ladies of Entertainment honorees, an exceptional group of women who have distinguished themselves not just through their successful careers but also through their work outside of the professional realm,” Manuel Abud, CEO of The Latin Recording Academy, said in a statement. “Our past honorees have helped grow our Mentorship Program, and we look forward to having this year’s class continue that legacy and empower future generations of young women.”
Gloria Trevi’s Special Honor
Mexican star Gloria Trevi will be the 2025 Hispanic Heritage Legend Award honoree, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation announced earlier this week. “Her fearless artistry, record-breaking tours and unwavering advocacy embody the spirit of this recognition,” Antonio Tijerino, Hispanic Heritage Foundation president/CEO, said in a statement.
The ceremony will take place on Sept. 4 at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C., and will air nationally on PBS. Rauw Alejandro was previously announced as the 2025 Hispanic Heritage Award honoree for Vision.

The Puerto Rican superstar will lead the panel titled “The Power of Reinvention,” where the hitmaker will open up about his “legendary career, the evolution of his artistry, and how he is shaping his next chapter,” according to a press release.

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce’s Engagement News Celebrated by Sabrina Carpenter, Charlie Puth, Jelly Roll & More: ‘Love Looks Good On You’

After Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement on Tuesday (Aug. 26), social media exploded with well-wishes for the superstar couple — from ecstatic fans and the pair’s famous friends alike.
Celebrity reactions included Sabrina Carpenter, who is the only featured artist on Swift’s upcoming The Life of a Showgirl album, teaming up with her Eras tourmate for the project’s title track. On Instagram Stories, Carpenter shared 10 white hearts above an engagement photo of the couple embracing with their foreheads touching.
Charlie Puth shared the same photo on his Instagram Stories, writing above it: “Congratulations Taylor & Travis! This is the best part of life. So happy for you both!!” Puth was in his own #EngagementEra last year, before marrying longtime family friend Brooke Sansone in September 2024.
Jelly Roll couldn’t contain his all-caps excitement on Instagram Stories, writing, “Let’s go TRAV AND TAYLOR! Congrats big dog! @killatrav love looks good on you bubba.”
Avril Lavigne shared the engagement post too, writing on Instagram Stories: “Awww huge congratulations to @taylorswift and @killatrav.” She finished her message with three ring emojis and three shimmering pink heart emojis. Chainsmokers DJ/producer Alex Pall chimed in on Instagram Stories too, with a message for the NFL star: “Shout out to the lover boy @killatrav.”
Beyond Swift’s fellow pop stars, Kelce’s football family also weighed in on the news, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sharing three red hearts on Instagram Stories alongside the engagement post, and his wife Brittany writing on IG: “Two of the most genuine people meet & fall in love. Just so happy for these two.”
Gracie Hunt, daughter of Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt, shared her “congratulations” on Instagram Stories, adding, “so happy for you two.” She also released a statement to People, which read: “I can’t stop smiling — Travis and Taylor’s engagement feels like a modern fairytale unfolding in real life. Their love story has captured so many hearts, and now it’s stepping into an even more magical chapter.”
Some more of Swift’s high-profile friends sent messages too, with Taylor’s childhood bestie Abigail (name-dropped on her Fearless single “Fifteen”) simply writing, “This ❤️,” above the engagement news on Instagram Stories, while supermodel/actress and longtime #Squad member Cara Delevingne wrote “@taylorswift + @killatrav” with 14 hearts-on-fire emojis.
After President Trump’s surprisingly supportive reaction to the engagement news earlier Tuesday, another vocal Swift critic, conservative host Megyn Kelly, shared that she was “rooting” for the couple — among other less-cheerful words. “I am rooting for them,” Kelly wrote on her website, after saying that Swift lost her when “she went political and, like anybody who does that in the arts, they risk alienating half the country.” Kelly’s essay continued: “I don’t think it is a coincidence that the person she ultimately decided to settle down with is a real man, is a football player, is a tough guy who doesn’t really take a lot of sh– from people. That is generally attractive to most women. I think it is no accident that this gal from the south [Note: Swift is from Pennsylvania] who started out singing country songs found him attractive, and he was ultimately the one who won her heart. I also think it is obvious the reasons why he would be attracted to Taylor Swift, so I am rooting for them.”
Swift and Kelce had nothing but support from tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who simply shared a clapping emoji alongside the news on X.
After sharing the role of King Herod in this month’s Jesus Christ Superstar live production at the Hollywood Bowl, actors John Stamos and Josh Gad once again teamed up to congratulate Taylor and Travis, lip-syncing to Swift’s Billboard Hot 100 top five hit “Love Story” while riding the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World. “When you hear the happiest news at the happiest place on earth,” the pair captioned the video, asking in their collab Instagram post: “Where were you when you heard the news?”
Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay gave Stamos and Gad a run for their money, as he perfectly played off Swift and Kelce’s original “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married” caption in his own Instagram post. “From one ring to the next,” Ramsay wrote alongside a photo of himself with Kelce on the field for the 2023 Super Bowl, in which Kelce’s Chiefs beat the Eagles. “Congrats @killatrav & @taylorswift ! From your favourite Home Ec Teacher.”

Burning Man’s Orgy Dome Destroyed by ‘Hurricane-Force’ Windstorm as Desert Braces for Predicted Rain

Organizers of Burning Man’s infamous Orgy Dome have announced that the space will not open during the event this week following damage by heavy winds over the weekend.
“Our build team worked so hard this past week to *erect* our lovely space,” reads a post published Sunday by the official Orgy Dome Instagram account. “Unfortunately, the winds yesterday undid all that labor and wrecked our structure. We are still here and thankfully safe, we hope to gift the playa some workshops and will keep you updated.”
This post followed another one from earlier the same day announcing that “what remains of the dome is beyond repair.”
An annual tradition at Burning Man, the Orgy Dome is a space where, its organizers say, “couples and moresomes can escape the dust and heat of Black Rock City. We pride ourselves in creating a sex-positive, consensual space for couples and moresomes to play during their stay at Black Rock City. The Orgy Dome is a safe, inclusionary, and exploratory environment. All couples and moresomes who are adults are welcome in the Dome – straight, lesbian, gay, bi, polyamorous and monogamous. We welcome the combination of love in all forms.”
The Orgy Dome is among several installations and projects that were destroyed or damaged following a Sunday windstorm that happened at the Burning Man site, located in the remote Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada. Other reported damage includes a 50 foot tall art installation called Black Cloud that was created by a team of artists from Ukraine and which was meant to serve as a symbol of freedom for the country amid its ongoing war while also warning about the dangers of a potential World War III.
According to a press release from the creators of Black Cloud, “After 5:30 p.m. [on Aug. 24] a sudden hurricane-force wind swept across the desert. Despite the calculations, the installation withstood only the first fifteen minutes. A powerful gust tore the structure apart from within, and the storm destroyed Black Cloud completely.”
“Even though on paper and by calculations it was supposed to withstand even such a storm, reality proved otherwise,” Vitaliy Deynega, the general producer of Black Cloud, wrote on his Facebook page. “It held against the wind for the first fifteen minutes, and then tore apart in the middle—the storm burst inside and destroyed it completely.” Organizers note that they plan to reassemble Black Cloud in locations throughout Europe, with dates and locations to be announced.
While high winds and white-out level dust storms are common during any given year at Burning Man, the hurricane-force winds on Saturday, when gusts reached up to 50 mph, are far less frequent. Widely circulated videos from the storm show these winds toppling tents and shade structures while raising massive dust clouds.
The forecast Tuesday (Aug. 26) also predicts a 51% chance of rain and thunderstorms, conditions that could further complicate matters on a site that’s sensitive to rain.
The windstorm marks the third time in the last four years that Burners have faced particularly challenging weather conditions. In 2022, temperatures reached up to 106 degrees, creating what was for many the hottest Burning Man in memory. Then in 2023, nearly an inch of rain fell on the site, creating expanses of thick mud that required organizers to put a no-driving order in place. The single gate to the event was closed, no more Burners were let in, and those already on-site were advised not to leave.
Burning Man is happening now through Sept. 1.

King Princess Weighs In on Betty Who’s Recent Comments About Dating a Man as a Queer Woman: ‘You Are Not a Victim’

The internet has had a lot to say about Betty Who‘s recent appearance on the Made It Out podcast — and now, King Princess is offering her two cents on the situation.
In a TikTok posted Tuesday (Aug. 26), Mikaela Straus shared her thoughts on the recent controversy, in which Who talked about being a queer woman while dating a straight man, and how it felt “like a crime to be straight” in the queer community.
“You are not a victim because you started dating a man and queer people are disappointed in you because you used the queer community to market your music,” Straus said in her video. “They feel betrayed, that’s fair, you have to live with that. Who cares? To get up on a podcast and claim this victimhood when you are in a position of privilege — dating a man in a heteronormative society — is ridiculous, and it is not going to resonate with people.”
Straus did not specifically call out Who by name, but clarified in a comment under the video that her statements were “about the many divas who felt the need to do this THIS YEAR,” seemingly also referring to similar controversies that erupted around JoJo Siwa and Fletcher.
“Date a man, it’s not a big deal. But why are you on a podcast talking about it? It’s not an interesting narrative,” Straus continued in her video. “We live in a country where our rights are being stripped from us every day, and you think it’s important to get on a podcast and talk about how hard it is to be in a heteronormative relationship? Diva!”
During her appearance on the Made It Out podcast, Betty Who also made comments about lesbian pop star Reneé Rapp, saying that she would “hold space” for the singer to one day fall in love with a man while trying to make a larger point about the fluidity of sexuality. “Reneé Rapp is like, ‘You’ll never catch me dating a man.’ It’s like, ‘Go off, queen! I love that for you,'” Who said. “But I also hold space for her in 10 years if she goes, ‘Oops, I met the love of my life and it’s this man, I didn’t mean to.’ It’s like, that’s OK!”
